Located on Norris Road North Mackay, Fitzgerald is one of six primary schools servicing residential areas of Mt. Pleasant, Northview, Eaglemount Heights and Beaconsfield as well as the more established areas of North Mackay.
Fitzgerald State Primary School, which was established in 1979, is a large primary school in the Mackay Hinterland and North Mackay Education District. It caters for students from prep to year six. Enrolments in 2008 had reached almost full capacity in primary. As a consequence of continued enrolment growth, an Enrolment Management Plan has been implemented since 2002.
This strategy aims to manage the enrolment of the school within existing capacities of staffing and facilities. The plan will enable the school to maintain current levels of student numbers of approximately 680, along with all existing curriculum offerings, according to the design capacity of the school. Although there is an enrolment management plan in place, students may enrol from outside the catchment area if there are places available.
The school's eastern boundary is shared with North Mackay State High School. The close proximity of North Mackay State High School enhances the transition program for Years 6 to Year 7. The majority of the school's year six's attend Mackay North State High School after their primary education.
